Check our list of Capitol Hill Supporters to see if your elected officials are cosponsors!

If your elected representatives are already cosponsors, please send them a brief thank you letter.  All too often, legislators don’t hear from their constituents when they do something right – so please, show your appreciation for their support of battlefield preservation!

Below are sample letters you can personalize and send to your elected officials.

You can find the office address for any of your elected officials by using the Find Your Lawmakers link on the left.  If you have questions please contact Brent Laurenz at takeaction@civilwar.org or 800-298-7878 ext. 220 if you need assistance.

Sample House Thank You Letter 1

Dear Representative __________ :

As a constituent, I am writing to thank you for your support on the issue of Civil War battlefield preservation and for signing on as a cosponsor of the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Act of 2007, H.R. 2933.  This bill enjoys broad bipartisan support in Congress, and I am proud that you have agreed to serve as a cosponsor.  The Civil War Battlefield Preservation Act of 2007 will allow more historic lands to be saved from certain development, and it will help preserve even more battlefields as we approach the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

The preservation of these hallowed grounds where the Civil War was fought and won should be important to all Americans because these battlefields allow us to truly understand what happened on these fields so long ago.  Your leadership on this issue is sure to help garner support for preservation efforts so that future generations can enjoy the battlefields as we do today.

To date, the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Program has been used to save 14,000 acres in 15 states.

Again, thank you, I am grateful for your vision and commitment on this issue.

Sincerely,
