The Petition Reads:

Dear General Assembly Member:

I strongly support the Virginia Sesquicentennial Battlefield Initiative, a proposal to provide $5 million in funding for the Virginia Civil War Battlefield Fund in the FY2008-2009 budget. With the Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration just around the corner, there is no better time for the State General Assembly to renew its commitment to protecting The Old Dominion’s hallowed Civil War battlegrounds.

Because of the tremendous growth Virginia has been experiencing in the past two decades, onlya few years remain before many of Virginia’s battlefields are lost to development. These sites, which generate tourism to the state and serve as outdoor classrooms for young Virginians, should be preserved to visit, learn from, and enjoy.

Please support Virginia’s unique Civil War heritage and help preserve our battlefields for future generations.
